How it works
Text: characters that take up no space
A zero-width space sits between letters but draws nothing. It can break search, word counts and code, and can be used to mark copied text. Tag characters go further and spell out invisible messages.
What the checker looks for
- Hidden messages: Unicode tag characters and selector runs that can carry readable text. We decode and show it.
- Invisible characters: zero-width spaces and joiners, byte order marks, soft hyphens and direction controls.
- Unusual spaces: non-breaking, narrow and other special-width spaces.
- Style characters: curly quotes, the single-character ellipsis, em and en dashes. These are optional to clean.

Questions
What is a zero-width space?
A character that takes up no room on screen. It's meant for marking where long words may break, but it often slips into copied text and can break search, word counts, passwords and code.
Why does text copied from ChatGPT contain odd spaces?
Chat interfaces and web pages often use non-breaking spaces and curly quotes for nicer display. When you copy the text, those characters come along. They aren't a watermark, but they can make text look pasted and trip up other software.
What are tag characters?
Invisible Unicode characters that mirror ordinary letters. Strung together they can spell out a message that no one sees but any program can read. The checker decodes and shows that message.
Does this make AI text undetectable?
No. AI detectors look at writing patterns, and real text watermarks live in word choice. Removing characters changes neither.
Will cleaning break emoji or other languages?
No. Joiners inside emoji and the non-joiners used in scripts like Persian or Hindi are recognised and left alone.
